Question

Bandit
I have a beautiful 2 year old male husky, who I love alot but I am running into a problem with him. My boyfriend and I took in a female mix breed dog that was left to wander the streets. Soon as the two meet they were best friends were one went the other would go. Duchess has just started her heat and it is driving my male insane he wont eat, he is crying alot, and is really acting out of his norm and i wanted to know what we could do to help him through this until we can get her fixed at the end of her heat.

Answer
there is absolutely nothing you can do to redirect this dog's attention; even separating them (which you MUST or she will get pregnant) won't extinguish his physical agony.  You need to get that dog neutered.  Wait a full ten weeks after the onset of the female's heat cycle to have her spayed; this allows the hormonal influence on her behavior to obtain its peak and her body tissues to decrease (after heat cycle).  Your bitch will not be actually fertile until the blood let is brown and you will see her FLAGGING: that means, she will lift her tail and turn her back.  You can't mistake this behavior.  DO NOT ALLOW THESE TWO TO INTERACT AT ALL until her flagging behavior is OVER.  You'll end up with puppies, otherwise.
