Beagle not fixed - bothering other dog

Question
What can we do about this?  The beagle is older and trys to mount our other dog.  The other dog growls, but the beagle won't stop.

Answer
First, have the Beagle neutered (even though he may be an adult.)  Testosterone will reduce and some (not all) related behaviors will extinguish.  Mounting is not a sexual behavior.  It is related to dominance (unless of course the other dog is an unspayed female in season.)  Your other dog is reacting to the dominance behavior by growling but is not in any other way asserting him/herself.  You need to step in by getting some psychological dominance over both dogs.  Put the Beagle on a house tab (long lightweight training leash) and redirect him when he begins this behavior (this means give him something else to do by leading him away, NOT punishing, using the leash to lead him, not your hands.)  Learn about positive reinforcement training and teach both dogs one simple behavior (separately) so that they can both succeed and be rewarded by you.  If your Beagle is a new addition (as it appears), give this dog time to settle in.  He needs clear, consistent, patient and loving stewardship.
