alpha dog and new puppy

i have a 7 yr old staffordshire terrier, his name is elvis.  he really is the best dog in the world.  my fiance just brought home a puppy. all of my friends have said "are you crazy, elvis will kill that dog"  and now i am worried.  elvis has been known to scrap with other dogs, but we havent had an occourance like this in 4 years.  i guess my fiance figured since it is a puppy, elvis will be able to assert himself right away and the puppy will understand he (elvis)is the alpha dog.  i know that elvis will nip at the puppy to teach him, but should i be worried about him killing the pup?

just introduce them slowly. For a few weeks through a glass door or looking through a window. Then for a few weeks through a fence. Then put them on a leash and walk them around each other but not too close just in case. After a while, they should settle down. This is what I did with my dogs and I hope this helps and feel free to follow up.
