Change in Dogs Behaviour

Question
Hello Alan, Thank you for donating your time to help others. We have a 9 month old flat coat retriever whom we have had since she was 2 months old. She is a very loving dog and we have not had any problems with her. We recently went out of town for 3 days. As she is such a social dog, we placed her in a private home for the time we were away. She was alone with the young man who has a very good reputation of taking care of other animals. She was the only animal there over nights but in the day she was with another couple of dogs for walks. When we picked her up to come home, she was out on a walk with the young man. She seemed happy and was happy to see us too. The young man said that she was a doll to have around. Since she has been home, she is not her regular self. She seems to be a little subdued with everything. It is almost like some of her puppyhood is gone. Do you have any thoughts on what could have caused this change? We will be having a week long vacation in the summer and thought we would use this care-giver again. Thank you for any assistance you may have. Diane Dahl, Oslo, Norway

Answer
Dear Diane,

Thanks for the question and your kind words.

Changes in schedules and in the environment have various effects on dog behavior. I can't comment on what might have or have not happened when she was away.

As to her behavior - I would make sure she's eating a healthy nutritional diet - that means no corn products, no by-products and no processed grains or flour.

If you're not already, start a training program and put into place a communication, motivation and a reward system. Using a clicker is one good method. Check out the book, "Click Here - For a Well Trained Dog" .

I'm guessing that she'll be fine in a day or so! If not, ask around for the name of a good trainer. I know there are many good trainers in Oslo! Try searching the Internet for Syn Alia Training System. Good Luck.
