QuestionMy husband and I currently have a two and a half year old female shih poo who is very good with children and other dogs and are considering adopting an eight month old female english bulldog. But I am concerned about how they will get along living together. There is a male bulldog available that is quite younger than the female. We were curious to know if one sex would be a better choice than the other. Thank you for your time.
AnswerIn very general terms, it is better to mix M & F rather than F & F. In many cases, M & M will work too, if both are neutered.
I am assuming your female has been spayed? If not, I would take care of this before getting a male. Neutered males cannot produce offspring, but they can still copulate, and may try to do so with a female in heat.
I also would give your present dog a "say" in the matter - have her meet the potential adoptee before bringing it home to see how they interact off premises.
