Adopting older chihuahuas

Question
Hi,
I've been offered 2 older female Chihuahuas from a breeder. They are 6 and 7 and the breeder has told me that they are both very healthy and have never had any health problems. My concern is their age. Is it a bad idea to take in older dogs? I mean what am I to expect in adopting older dogs? They're house trained and seem to be good temperament. I'm also concerned about spaying them? Should I spay them at this age? Are they are risk for mammary cancer b/c they haven't been spayed and have been breeding once a year? I am confused and would really like to provide a loving and caring environment for these 2 dogs. I'm just not sure about the age factor. Please help.

Answer
Hi Sophia, Small dogs live long lives. I would not hesitate to take them in. Spaying them now can also extend their lives. Because they were used for breeding, they are at no greater risk of cancer that any intact female. Getting them spayed at the same time will help you because they will both be feeling crumby at the same time and you can plan it so that you are home with them (on a weekend...). Since they are housebroken, they were probably not kept in cages just to pump out babies and will probably bring you lots of joy. Any good vet will tell you that it is not to late to spay and it will prolong their lives. I am sure that you will do an excellent job in providing a wonderful home for them. Let me know how it goes. Leave me some feedback and a follow-up, and let me know if you have any other questions or problems. Best wishes and Warm Regards, Susan
