Question
I have 3 boxers. We have had them for a few years now, there are 2 females
and one male. They are wonderful dogs and a pleasure to have and play with.
We have a little maltese poodle and all 3 boxers get along with her just fine.
When we originally got the maltese, she was still a puppy and the male boxer
kept taking little bites at her, he stood over her for lone periods refusing to
let her move and growled at her. she never got hurt by him and he eventually
got use to her and now he is fine with her. The other 2 females were happy
with her from the start and showed no sign of aggression. The male still
wants to stand over the maltese when she comes back from the doggy
groomer but its only for a short period of time. Now our neighbor is moving
and they have a little Yorkshire terrier and she is 6 months old. My family and
i love this dog and the neighbors gave her to us as they cant take her with.
She came home with us and has adapted well. she is extremely playful and
she eats well. We love her but there is a problem. The male boxer seems to do
exactly the same to her as what he use to do to the maltese but worse. What
must i do - please help i'm desperate.

Answer
Does the male boxer have a recall? Can you call him to you? I would simply call him when he's standing over her and give him a treat. I'd supervise very carefully for a while. With the kind of size difference you have, it wouldn't take much to injure the yorkie. I wouldn't leave them together if you aren't there, just for safety's sake. It sounds like he's just trying to teach her his version of the house rules. If you punish him for it, he's likely to resent her worse. Also, if you start doing some good training and Nothing in Life is Free with ALL the dogs - but particularly the male - it will help him understand that you are the leader and make the house rules, and he doesn't have to. I think this is important to do in any multi-dog household. http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm
