Canine Cognitive Dysfunction

Question
Hi, I have a cavalier king charles spaniel who is 15 & a half. He is suffering from dementia and recently has deteriorated quite quickly. He has started having what I can only describe as 'fits' during the night. He violently shakes, his eyes are wide open and he has often done a poo. Just one. He then calms down and comes round and seems very disorientated and walks into corners and just stares. He gets himself trapped under tables and inbetween pieces of furniture and walls.
During the day he paces around a lot. He still has a very healthy appetite but he no longer wants to go on walks or even go outside.
Is there any treatment for CCD?

Answer
You need to consult a veterinarian regarding this dog's behavior as it can indicate a neurological problem, rather than a problem with cognition.  There is a medication to treat cognitive dysfunction in aging dogs, Selegiline, but there are side effects that would contraindicate its use in a dog with serious neurological problems.  There comes a time as loving owners when we have to determine quality of life issues for our beloved companions.  I know this is a very difficult thing to do.
