Question
Hello, meatball my bulldog had a tramatic experience in his cage while sleeping.  He awoke in a frenzy in mid-morning desperately trying to get out of his cage nearly destroying it.  Now he wont sleep in it anymore and sleeps during the day and not at night like he is use to.  I cleaned his entire area and even changed his bedding but he still wont sleep in it.  I have tried several ways to entice him to go in it but when he still starts to breathe heavily to the point that it scares me so I let him out.  During the night he just paces and wont stay still keeping both of us awake.

Answer
Whatever precipitated this event created a strong conditioned fear response in your dog.  There is no reason to ever crate a dog unless you are actively house training.  Remove the crate.  Give him a soft, special spot in the kitchen possibly, or a soft bed in your room, and give him TIME to re-acclimate to normal hours.  Domestic dogs are not naturally nocturnal.  If he's sleeping in a safe, open area away from your bed, his anxiety driven behavior won't bother you and he will (perhaps slowly) readjust to usual hours. You also need to bring this event to the attention of the veterinarian.  The dog may have had a seizure (single or isolated seizures are not considered problematic) and should be neurologically evaluated.
