Question
Dear Dr. Connor,
We have a black lab with epilepsy. We are considering a wireless electric fence, but we are concerned that we'll invite more seizures during the training process. Should we be concerned?
Tamie

Answer
Under no circumstances should you use an electric fence.  I'm opposed to this containment system for many reasons, largest of which is that it doesn't keep anything OUT and dogs DO get through it and then can't return; but there are other reasons, also.  Any dog with neurological dysfunction is especially sensitive to emotional stressors and the electric fence is a constant daily stressor.  Additionally, not knowing what sets off a seizure precludes you from using anything (auditory or visual) that could contribute to one.
