Question
I have a 2 1/2 yr old shih shu all he does is lick everything. People,himself,floor etc.
I have taken him to a vet, but he puts him on steriods, it stops but I don't want to keep him on that.  I have also tried benedryl for children.Thank you

It sounds as though your dog may have allergies.  Dogs generally get inhalant or contact allergies more than food allergies, but you would need to get the dog tested to be sure.  If you cannot afford that, as it is expensive, you could choose to eliminate some of the common offenders.  So, avoid feeding chicken, soy or wheat - get the dog on a good, premium food with a single source protein.  I like California Naturals Duck and Potato, but you can choose others.  Or, you can go for a grain free food, such as Innova Evo Small Bites.
Make sure the dog is flea-free.  Even one flea bite can make for lots of itching.  If you live in the south, be sure your dog has protection, such as Frontline, or whatever your vet recommends.
If you do not want to do steroids long term, you may want to consult with a holistic vet to see if there are alternative treatments.  The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Assn. has a listing on its web page.
