Question
QUESTION: Hi my name is linda i have 2 beagles our female is in season and we have taken her to grandmas our male has been crying ,digging, barking all night and day we have had no sleep in the last week we have tried bringing him into the house but he is still the same is there anything we can do before the neighbours start complaining please help !

ANSWER: She must have been pretty far into season before you took her to grandmas. Thing is, Beagles have one of the best noses in the canine world. It's almost impossible for us to imagine how good their sense of smell actually is. What you describe isn't really a behavior or training problem. It is natural instinct at a very high level. Time will take care of the problem. A little Vicks vapor rub on his nostrils may help, but probably the best choice is when your female is out of season to get her spayed so you don't have to go through this again. It's very hard on the male. Sandy Case MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com

QUESTION: hi thanks for your help i think she was far into her season we only removed her when she put her tail to the side which was a week yesterday .we took him to grandmas yesterday but he was still trying to mount her so we had to bring him home again. when should we bring her home this her second season.we are planning on breeding next season as she will be 2yrs old. thanks linda

Answer
Most bitches are in estrus for about three weeks. And then they need to be bathed or they will continue to be "interesting." I hope you have researched your breed and their health issues, as well as pedigrees. Responsible breeders have homes lined up for their puppies, and are willing to be responsible if at any time an owner is no longer able to keep the puppy. They don't let their dogs end up in shelters or rescues. Here's a site on diseases common in the breed.
