Question
Hi, I just got a Chihuahua puppy 2 months old, I got him when he was a month. He is very smart he already knows his name, the food place, he socialize fine with other dogs, he is learning how to walk, but the problem is that since he is denting he loves to bite everything, me, my hands my shoes. He has a lot of toys as well as a bone. He does the biting only when he is playing but when I say no its like keep going, at first I use to point at him and tap him on the head saying no and he would stop but know its like he does not even care. I heard its not good to tap them or be mean when they are being bad because it does not help, what can i do to make him understand no biting!!

Answer
Firstly, I'm not surprised he's a nipper!  Four weeks is way too early to have removed him from his mother/littermates.  Sometimes, there's no choice, but if there is, a puppy should stay until they are eight weeks old, since they learn a lot about inhibiting their bite from mom and their brothers or sisters.  You can simulate that by getting him into a "little dog" class or play group made up of small, safe dogs, right away.  You are correct that tapping his nose isn't effective, and, in fact, it can make things worse.  The right thing to do would be to act as though you are another dog.  So, when he puts his teeth on you, yelp as if it hurts, then take all your attention away.  Turn your head, make no eye contact, and don't touch or speak to him.  You may have to do this repeatedly.  The learning is a gradual process.  If he gets persistent, still take your attention away, and maybe even duck into the bathroom, or a closet, so he cannot follow to nip at your pant legs. What he will learn is that all the fun stops if he nips, but you return and pay attention to him if he sits nicely for petting or leaves your hands and shoes alone.
There's a good book that you can get, too, to help you through this: "Little Dogs - Training Your Pint-Sized Companion" by Deborah Wood.  I think you can get it on Amazon.com.  Good luck!
