Question
I don't think it is a behavior problem, but since the last couple of months my 7 yr old maltese has woken up out of sound sleep about 3 times so far, whaling and yelping like if to be in pain kind of stretching and stiffining up- but just as suddenly it stops. She also seems drained after those scary seconds. Could she possibly be convulsing? Other than that she is always perky and content.  Thank you I will be waiting for your response.

Answer
It is possible that she is experiencing some sort of neurological problem or physical pain,  but you're right: this is not purely behavioral.  You need to consult a veterinarian and present these symptoms; be certain the veterinarian is a high-end professional, not just the vet at the corner.  It's possible the dog is dreaming and experiencing reaction to that (yes, dogs dream!), but for her to have this persistent response is very unusual.  Dogs don't demonstrate pain the way humans do; she may have an underlying disorder.  Full blood chemistry (super chemistry), orthopedic evaluation and neurological evaluation are required.  If you are unable to find a veterinarian that you feel is capable, contact the veterinary college in your geographical area and ask for referral.  It's worth a trip of several hundred miles to insure the health of your beloved companion, who should have MANY MORE YEARS ahead of her.
