Question
I have a 4 year old female boxer/golden retriever. She has always been a very loving dog especially with my 21 month old son. Lately I have noticed she is getting annoyed with the way the kids play with her. The other day she growled at my son when he tried to play with her. I know she is getting fed up with the kids what should I do????

Answer
Well, I can tell what NOT to do.  Never punish her for growling at them.  That's her only early warning system, and you want to know when she's getting annoyed so that you can redirect the children.  If the dog has no way to warn because she's afraid to growl, the next step might be to just go ahead and bite.  It is a fallacy that Golden Retrievers and Boxers are just always "good with kids".  Any dog can be annoyed by the constant attention, even if it's "appropriate".  The best way to protect your kids is to protect your dog!!!  Great book on the subject:
Coleen Pelar's "Living With Kids and Dogs Without Losing Your Mind"
Here's her web site - good info there, too.
