Question
my 3 year old dotson is a ankle bighter. is is very hard and embarrising to have visiters. is there aything i can do to help this behavier? thanks so much, natalie

Answer
At three, your dachshund should already be out of the "obnoxious puppy" stage, so it seems that she has learned that this behavior works, for whatever reason, and keeps doing it.  My advice would be to take her to a clicker training class.  The reason is that clicker training is non-invasive (not punishing), and provides a good way of telling your dog, at the very moment she does something, that it was the behavior you wanted her to do.  This type of training can be used to help you train her to go to her own mat or bed, rather than pester guests.  To find a trainer near you, try this site: www.clickerteachers.net.
If you cannot afford training, or can't find a trainer near you, there are some free or inexpensive ways to learn clicker training:

Also, you can read Peggy Tillman's book, "Clicking With Your Dog".
Until you get her trained, you may want to crate her, or confine her to another room, when you have guests.  The reason is that every time she nips, she gets attention or the behavior works to make the person go away, so she is being "reinforced" for doing it.  You want to break that cycle!  Once you do that, plus learn to train the basics, you may want to go on to this book: "Click to Calm" by Emma Parsons.  It's a good protocol for teaching your dog to pay attention to you, and not to the thing that triggers her bad behavior (guests).
Sorry to say, there are no quick fixes, but this is definitely something that you can either choose to manage by crating your dog, or by training her to do an alternative behavior (down/stay, go to mat, leave it, etc.)
Hope this has been helpful to you.  Good luck.
