Question about my Pomeranian

Question
My 13 year old Pom recently started making a hacking noise.  This, I am told, is due to trac collapsing.  I am looking to see if there are any medications that would help her.  I have taken her to see a vet who has prescribed coughing medication, and now she is taking medication to coat her tummy and throat should there be any injury caused by the hacking (sounds like she has something caught in her throat and is chocking).  I have been told that we may need to see a specialist.  I am surprised as this is a Pom trait.  I am looking for something less evasive and less expensive as I have alreay spent 300.00 in vet fees with no relief for my dog.

Answer
Hi Lisa,  Let me qualify myself before I start by saying I'm not a veterinarian, just a dog nut.  Having said that, here's my experience with this condition.  I once had a Beagle that developed collapsed trachea in later life.  They said it was probably from tugging on his chain.  I gave him some medications (can't remember what they were) & fed him alot of soft, soupy foods.  His coughing sometimes was better & sometimes not.  He coughed off & on for the last 2 years of his life.  However, There are many, many, conditions that have this symptom.  Lots of viruses & worms too.  I have also heard of countless accounts of dogs getting things stuck in their throats and stung by bees also.
I don't know about it being a Pom "trait", my wife's uncle was one of the top Pomeranian breeders in the country & I can't remember ever hearing any coughing in his kennels.
I hope this helps some Lisa,  I probably wouldn't give up on it totally, but I wouldn't invest my life savings on a 13 year old dog either.   Good Luck Lisa, & Thanks for asking,   Rob
