Cats not covering poop, need to fix!

Question
Hi,
I have two cats, one who I've had for 3 years, who used to only go outside, and one who I got when I moved into an apartment 1 year ago, to be a buddy to my first cat, who had feral parents but was born in a house.  Neither of them seem to cover up their poop after they go, though they seem to enjoy scratching around quite a bit.  It is as if they know to scratch, but don't know WHY they should scratch!  I tried to toilet train them about 6 months ago, and it worked for a while until the little one gave up and I had to give up on both.  They were fine going back to the box, but it gets smelly because they don't cover up the poop.  I was living alone and just dealing, but now I have a roommate and she is hoping to find a solution.  I am currently using World's Best Cat Litter, and feeding them Nutro All Natural Food.  Help!

Answer
Eugenia,

That is a common quirk some cats have. I have a couple that do it too. Supposedly it's a dominance thing not to cover it up. Personally I think they are just missing the cover poop gene in their brain!

The best suggestion I can give you is to get a self-cleaning litterbox. I use the LitterMaid (PetSmart, Target, etc.) and I love it. As long as you put the litter BELOW the level they suggest it works fine. The cats get used to the noise and movement pretty quickly. I've never had one that was scared of it. It scoops up the litter about 5 min. after the cat goes and you always have a clean litterbox.

There are electric air cleaners (not air fresheners) that you can plug into the wall made for pet odors. I got mine at Target.

Hope this helps.
