When to separate cats

Question
Hello!

Here is my dilemma. When I was in college I got found a little kitten and kept her as my own.   She has grown up beautifully and is now a happy and healthy four year old.  About two years ago I bought another cat, Mimi.  Mimi is a full bred siamese and is definitley the 'boss'.  When I graduted college I moved back with my parents (about a year and a half ago).  Mimi was still a baby at this point.   Meeka, my older cat is very  attached to me.  She sleeps with me every night and greets me at the door when I come home.  She even follows me around the house.  Mimi, on the other hand has formed a very strong bond with my parents and the family dog.  They are both very social cats and make their preferences of people known.  I am getting ready to move into my own place, about a half hour away from my parents house.  There is no doubt I will take Meeka with me.  However, what do you think I should do about Mimi?  I would hate to separate Meeka and Mimi because they have been together since Mimi was a kitten.  They still play sometimes but usually do their own things?   I have heard it can be heartbreaking for cats to separate, but I don't know if it would be beneficial to take Mimi away from the home and people she knows.  Thank you so much for you time in reading and responding to this.

Answer
Hi Kate!

You are right to be concerned. Cats hate change.  Siamese are exceptionally intelligent and I think it would upset Mimi more than Meeka.  If Mimi is more attached to your parents than she is to Meeka, then I would leave her there.  However, if Mimi and Meeka sleep together, groom each other and generally play together, then I would keep them together.  Mimi would still be upset by the move, but not so much as being separated form Meeka if they are attached to one another.  If you do separate them,  I think you need to get another kitten as a companion for Meeka.  Mimi may do ok since there are dogs.  I have a Siamese and he loves my dogs too.  They will play and wrestle.  You may have to do a trial and see how it works. That might be your best bet.

God Bless,
Becky
