Fostering mom w/newborn kittens

Question
Hi Norm,
I am fostering a young mom with four 3-day-old kittens.  They all appear to be in good health. Mom chose to stay in a tiny kennel with her newborns. However, I am having to change out her bedding because she is urinating on herself instead of using the litter box. Is this normal behavior? Does it mean something is wrong with her? I hate to disturb her during this time with bedding changes but I can't let them stay on damp bedding.
Thanks

Answer
Jennifer,

Often for the first few days (usually 3-5), mama will not leave the kittens for any reason.  We often move food and litter pan right close to the kennel so they are close by when they eat.  Mama usually relaxes and begins to be more normal in eating and litter pan use. Also, you might check with your vet to make sure that nothing is wrong post partum.

I would give her and the kittens new bedding after she has urinated herself.

Best regards... Norm.
