Cat crying

Joe (my cat) was eating his dry food, when he stopped, he walked away from his dish low to the ground and started crying.  He stopped crying, but then laid down with his tongue hanging out.  He is sleeping now.  Breathing ok, he purred when I was petting him.  Any idea whats wrong with him?

Sounds like he was about to throw up but just didn't quite get there.  It is very possible he was eating too fast and this often causes vomiting for cats.  Does he often eat too fast?  When you say tongue hanging out, can you describe it a bit more?  Do you mean loosely hanging out or sticking out hard?  The latter would point once again to vomitting.
