Question
QUESTION: last night my little brother found a kitten  outside under the Pop-up camper. we could tell it was a new born cause its eyes were still mat-ed. the poor little thing couldn't do anything for its self when i put it by what i thought what was the mother the mother did nothing but watch the baby kitten lay on the ground and get covered withe fleas and fly's. i put on some gloves and wet a wash cloth and started cleaning its eyes up so the kitten could see! then i took it inside and bathed it in Luke warm water and washed its fur with "flea control shampoo for cats and dogs". All the fleas wouldn't come off so i couldn't keep it inside. my grandmother told me to put it in a card board box so i did i put the kitten in a box with to dish towels. the thing that bothers me is the kitten had weird white looking flaky stuff in small splotches around its belly and around its but on the tall. i did NOT touch this cause i was scared i would get it. do you know what it is? please e-mail me back A.S.A.P i need to know what to do with the kitten!!!

ANSWER: Kindale,

I am not sure what the weird white looking flaky stuff might be.  You might take it to a vet as a rescue (they often do not charge) and see what they can tell you.  The vet can also, probably, give you some idea of the age of the kitten.  If the eyes are open, the kitten is at least 2 weeks of age. Meanwhile, how is the kitten being fed? How is it being kept warm?

If the kitten is covered in fleas, then the kitten probably has tape worm.  Does the weird white flaky stuff kind of look like sesame seeds?

Best regards... Norm.

QUESTION: -yes the flaky stuff does look like seeds, do you know what it is?
-the kitten died last night, i think it was cause of mal-nutrition and not being feed by the mother. i called the humain society but they said they didnt take kittens so i left the kitten in a card board box with a towel around the kitten so it would be warm, how even i didnt have a way to feed it cause it was so young and a last minute thing. i thought i found the mother, cause a cat that had just gave birth about a week ago came over to the kitten and started liking it, i thought it would be fine, but we found it dead on the porch last night. thanks for trying to help.
-can i still know what that flacky stuff was?

Answer
Kindale,

Yes, the white flaky stuff are dried tapeworm segments.  Probably, by the time your little brother discovered the kitten, it was too far gone to save anyway.

The truth is, most kittens born in the wild do not make it anyway, but I am sure you did your best.
