pyoderma

Question
Is there a holistic way to treat this skin condition.  My dog received medication (Cephalexin 500mg) but he started to vomit after about 30 doses.  He sill has very dry skin with scaling patches that he will scratch until raw.  I feed him science diet and canned food high in aminoc fatty acids. Is there another spray (had Gentocin Topical spray) like over the counter, or a bath or do I need to take him back for a increased dosage of meds. He is 11 yrs old and otherwise in very good health.

Answer
When I see recurrent pyoderma in older dogs, I usually think of either a food allergy or hypothyroidism first.  Your vet can help you with these.  Bathing in a benzoyl peroxide shampoo 2-3 times weekly will help the bacterial skin infection.  If she has reactions to cephalexin, there are other antibiotics that can be used.  Ask your vet which one is recommended.
