koi fish in pond

Hello Robyn,
       I had a small pond dug on my property in Vermont two years ago. The pond is about 100 feet long by 50 feet wide and about 12 feet deep. It is feed by underground springs and some surface runoff. It is mostly used for swimming and I was planing on putting some koi or goldfish in the pond. Well just recently I saw three fish in the pond, they look like small koi about eight inches long. How could they have got there. Thanks,

That's small?  Sounds like a big pond to me!

Fish can appear in a pond via a number of routes:
1.  A human added them (some sneaky neighbor or kid).
2.  Fish eggs clung to the feet of a wading bird like a heron or a mammal's fur, and then those eggs were deposited in your pond when that animal moved.
3.  A predator (heron, raccoon, or whatever) dropped a live fish into the pond.

Most likely, it's #1 or 2.
