salt water and fish

Question
I have just set up my first tropical fish tank. It is not specifically salt water but the lady at the shop told me that all tropical fish need a little salt in their tanks. So I followed the instructions on the salt but now the salt has tinted my aquarium green! the salt had some sort of dye in it ad even though I added less than the recommended amount, the water is now green. Should I wait and hope for it to go away or should I empty this water and start again without salt? I also want to know what fish will work together and not eat the plants? thanks.

Answer
The salt should not have turned your water green. Being it is a freshwater tank you should have used regular aquarium salt??? With having fish in the tank you don't want to empty the whole tank, you can start with at most a 50% water change and not add anymore salt at this time. If you have mollies, platys, or swordfish the missing salt won't be an issue, the fish I listed do need that salt in the tank to be in the best condition. Once you do the water change what a few days and you can do another 25%, another few days and if needed another 25% water change. When you do the intial 50% water change make sure to add some aquasafe or stress coat to help ease the stress of the water change on the fish. In a clear seperate container add some water and salt to see if the salt is truly the issue...if that turns green then you know for sure it is the salt, if not there may be something else going on in your tank like and algae bloom. If you need anymore advice please feel free to contact me again. Happy fish keeping!!
