Question
hello ma'am. recently, my friend bought an ex-racehorse belonging to the breed THOROUGHBRED. hes a 10 year old bay gelding. the horse is only on grass all the time. so, can we feed any breed of cut out grass for the horse to graze? or let the cut out grass turn into hay as a forage for the horse?

Answer
Hello Rohit,

Thank you for your question.  Your horse can graze fresh forages safe for horses, or you can dry it and feed it as hay.  Fresh forages are ideal for horses but hay also serves the bill.  You just want to be sure that the pasture and/or hay do not contain plants that are toxic to horses.  Wikipedia has a great list of plants toxic to horses that you can find at:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_plants_poisonous_to_equines.  If the horse is used to grazing then you don't need to take long to introduce him to new pasture.  If he was used to eating dry hay all the time I would suggest you introduce him gradually to the fresh forage.  Best of luck to your friend.
