Question
I bought a Fell foal who has now turned 1 and up until the last couple of weeks he's just been a playful foal. Now he walks up to me with his head up and his ears back, he seems to think he is dominant.
He is kept with my 24 year old mare who used to be the dominant one in the field but now the balance has switched.
I had him castrated at 9 months old when I bought him although he was not aggressive or showing any stallion behaviour beforehand.
I am concerned about his behaviour and feel that it needs addressing now. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can sort this out?
Thankyou

Answer
Hi Sara!

When your young horse who thinks he is "mister man" approaches you with the "Get out of my way" look, make him get out of YOUR way.  Chung his halter a few times to get his attention and force him to back up away from you as you walk towards him.

Backing a horse up as you walk towards them is a submissive action on the part of the horse.  Its simply you telling him, "Hey, I am bigger than you."

Horses constantly challenge our authority when they are at a young age, but you can crack down on it to alleviate the unwanted behavior.  Constantly reestablish your own dominance by asking him to move over, back up, whoa, walk and so on.
