Question
I have two questions:
First, I have a 6yo Standard bred stallion that had emergency surgery 3 years ago for colic.  He survived, but doesn't gain much weight.  I know the surgeon removed 29 feet of intestine.  We have tried many different types of feed, hay, etc...  He is also a picky eater which doesn't help.  Is ther anything else I can do.  We just had him catsrated.

Second question:
I also have a 2.5 yo mare that just had a colt three weeks ago.  So she was very young when she concievd.  Will this stunt her growth, by having the growth plates harden?  She was supposed to be a very large mare.  She is a Tennessee Walker.

Thank you very much!

Answer
Rachel,
I apologize but your questions should be aimed toward a veterinarian.  I can tell you that at 2.5 years of age, this mare has a whole lot of growing to do.  Make sure her nutrition is kept very well during her lactation period.  And for being so young, I would suggest not breeding her back, nor would I suggest you breeding her for a couple of years.  I don't think that being bred at this age would stunt the growth.  As for the stallion, let me know what you have tried...can you see his ribs, hips...last time dewormed...is he up to date on his vaccinations?  Fill me in on my questions and we'll go from there.  I would recommend you checking with your veterinarian as to the accuracy of my information regarding the mare.

Look forwarding to helping you,
Justin
