Bits and crops

Question
Thanks for you quick response regarding rearing.  What type of shanked bit do you recommend for a horse/pony over 5 to show in?  Also can you explain the use of the crop on the shoulder vs. behind the rider's leg?

Answer
Hi Karen;

I don't recommend a shanked bit at all for this pony at this time.  They provide too much leverage and with a pony that has a forward issue...too much 'stop'...and that isn't what you want right now.

A full-cheek french link is a lovely bit that doesn't 'nutcracker' the tongue and provides some leverage on the poll when the 'keepers' are used.  It also helps prevent evasion through the shoulders and provides independant action between the left and right rein.

On the shoulder means 'forward'.  Behind the leg means 'move off (away) from the leg', as in asking for the ribcage or for lateral work.  Also, behind the leg can create a 'bucking' problem, especially with dominate and/or sensitive personalitied horses.

Sincerely,

Lana
