hard teats

Question
My father-in-law's horse is going to be foaling around May 28th. On the horse's teats, one of them is really hard. It feels like a long hard oblong knot. Is this normal. She is not leaking milk yet nor are they waxed over. Please e-mail an answer if you have one. Thanks Janis.

Answer
Dear Janis,
Sometimes mares teats will become hard and protrude out like a finger on a hand. But sometimes that hard knot can hurt or be uncomfortable to the mare. If she seems to be irritated by it, i suggest calling a vet. I think you should wait at least a week, and if the milk dosen't come or the lump stays there, i suggest a vet call then.
