carpet maybe good but that wont hold humidity.tortoises like to play in substrate.

I will need a top too otherwise my kitties might use it as a litter box.

Hey Luanne, you can put your normal substrate over the carpet. You can easily make a lid. 2x2 wood, ake it the size of the bookshelf. Then place wire around it. walaa you have aplace to place the heat and uvb lights as well. Then the precious kitties will not be able to get in,
would not want your tortoise eating cat poo. Youa re right there!
