moving with a rabbit

Question
So I am moving from Oregon to Vermont and will be bringing my 3 1/2 year old male rabbit.  How traumatic do you think this will be?  What can I do to make the trip more comfortable for him?  Can I sedate him for the 5 days or at least part of the time?  Would it be a good idea to sedate him?  What kind of behavior can I expect of him?
Do you think he will be okay with the trip?  I don't want to give him up halfway through the trip or have him die.  That would be absolutely devastating.  What is your traveling across the country with a rabbit advice?  All your advice will be appreciated.

Thank you,
Caroline

Answer
Has he ever been in a car other than trips to the vet?  Some bunnies don't mind the car, some are terrified, and you need to see which he is.

If terrified, you might check with your vet about sedating him.

If he doesn't seem to mind, set him up in a large carrier with a litterbox, water and food, and stop periodically so you can both stretch your legs.

I've known a lot of rabbits who have travelled cross-country (or in a few instances, internationally), and they've all come through it fine.

If you would like more tips, check with the people on Etherbun, the mailing list, and you will get all sorts of info.

I drove from Iowa to Texas with 3 bunnies 10 years ago, and they all survived fine.  Unhappy, but fine.
