Watery vaginal bleeding

Question
My female pot belly pig is almost 10 years old.  I also adopted her brother.  I had him neutered at a young age, but did not have Flora spayed per the Vet's advice, since there were no other intact male pigs around.  About 3 months ago, we noticed that when she had her monthly cycle, she had some very watery, bloody discharge.  It stops when her "menses" is over.  Do older female pigs go through a menopause type phase?  Is any of this bleeding within normal limits for an older female pig?  I would ask my Vet, but he retired and I have not found another one that treats pot belly pigs.  I am an RN and have read all about tumors, etc, but Flora's abdomen has not enlarged, and her appetite is unchanged and she is urinating and pooping without problems.  She also has no fever and is just as active as she has always been.  Please let me know what you think about this situation.  Thank you!

Answer
I am not a veterinarian and can not make a medical diagnosis over the internet.

Pigs loose fertility as they age. They may go through something very similar to a menopause, but because most studied focus on the vast numbers of pigs raised for food, there's very little information about aged pigs, because food pigs do not live past 9 months.

Uterine tumors are often symptom less until they are huge. Discharge can also signal an infection or urinary tract problem. If the discharge disappears and does not recur, it's probably Ok.

There's a list of vets that see pot-bellied pigs at www.farec.org  If there are none near you, contact the closest one, they may know of someone near you. If you have a regular vet who is willing, some pot-bellied pig vets will provide a phone consultation with another vet. Contact www.farec.org to arrange this.
