Question
I have two female rats (Simone and Maurice). Simone is pretty small for a rat her age; she's over two months old, but it's hard to tell exactly. Well, a few days ago, I discovered that Simone had given birth. Since Maurice is a female, she must've been pregnant when I bought her (she was the only female in a cage of six or seven rats at the store, but she seemed to young to be able to get pregnant!). Anyway, I've been able to see two babies. She seems to be feeding them and has made them a nest, but I'm concerned about the size of the litter. She likes to keep the two close, so I don't think there are others that I just can't see. I haven't noticed any dead babies either. Is it normal for her litter to be so small, even taking her size into account (she looks more like a large mouse than a rat, but maybe that's because she isn't fully grown yet)?

Answer
I think she's just a little rat with a small litter. I had one average size doe who routinely threw litters of 3 and 4, and one doe even had a litter of one. Small litters are usually much healthier and robust than larger litters; so I'd just thank your lucky stars you only had two "OOPS!" babies instead of twenty-two. :)
