fancy rat personalities vs other rodents

Question
well, I have been looking into getting my family (myself
and two daughters 5 and 3yrs old), some furry friends.
Thankfully, we come from a long line of pet-lovers and
thanks to grandpa's critters they know how to handle and
treat/respect animals. one less thing to worry about. I've
always had a soft spot for rodents though!  but we live in
Alberta, Canada and after all my research on rodents and
falling for rats; i find out fancy rats are illegal in this
province :( I want a rodent (or two or five), that is
intelligent and as personable (or at least comparably) as
rats. i'd like a pet i can pamper and actually build some
kind of relationship with. I am looking into African soft
furred rats (THESE ONES ARE LEGAL) but, some say they are
just plain mean.  and I've read mice are only good for
observational purposes. and gerbils like to be in their own
little worlds- no people included. Any and all information
and wisdom would be much appreciated!

Answer
Hi Violet

Wow, if I couldnt have my rats I would move. LOL

As for the African soft furred rats, they are just simply not domesticated enough. I would not say they are mean, they are simply just not like our domestic norway rats. ((Rattus norvegicus)

I have had mice and they are so fragile and although you can train them to trust you, they are not the same as rats by far.  Same for gerbils and hamsters.  In fact, hamsters bite.

Ferrets?  Are they allowed in your Province?  Although they are NOT rodents and are from the Weasel family, they are sweet and intelligent pets!
Sugar gliders?  They can be alot of fun but more work than rats for sure.
