Mite/lice prevention in rats and mice

Question
QUESTION: I noticed some tiny little (almost too small to see) red dots moving around on my rats and mice.  I haven't been able to tell if they're mites or lice, and if they're mites, what kind.  I just got a prescription for Revolution for cats from my vet, and I am going to use it on all my small animals (mice, rats, guinea pig, rabbits, I can't find any information on whether or not I should use it on my chinchillas or degus, and I think my dogs, cats and ferrets are safe), but I have a few questions first.
What can I use as a preventative measure for the cages?  Is there a spray/treatment that I can apply to the cages when I change the bedding?  I use soft wood bedding (fragrance and oil free) for everyone except the ferrets, I was originally using Care Fresh, but I noticed more mites/lice whenever I would change the bedding, so I stopped and switched to the soft wood.  Now I notice fewer mites/lice, but if there's something better that can help prevent future outbreaks, please let me know.
Thanks

ANSWER: Freeze any bedding for 24 hours before using.  Thats what I do.
No sprays are really worth the money so I would just wash things down real good.  The key to treating these things is the revolution. It takes care of things for up to a month when dosed properly.

Do you have the proper dose of revolution to use on the animals?

QUESTION: I have the small cat dosage, and I have a 1cc syringe and was told to give 2-3 units on the back of the neck of each rat, and 1 unit on the mice.  I was told to keep them separated for about a half hour so they can't clean the Revolution off each other.
I will probably have to get a separate freezer for the bedding, I buy the huge 20lb bags of soft wood shavings.
Does it sound like I have mites or lice?  On the rats, some of these things get big, around the size of a period, and are filled with blood when I squish them.  On the mice, they're really, really small, like a grain of sand.
Thanks

Answer
Ewww yes, the blood inside of them is from when they feed on the animal and become engorged with blood.  I loved squishing them, rotten darn mites!!  Those are mites.  Lice are thin and elongated, silver-ish in color, no wings. Revolution will kill either.

With the mouse I would use the smallest amount.  Usually it is .1cc for a 1 pound rat and .2 for a two pounder, so for a mouse it would be only  .05 ccs for the tiny mouse.

As for the bedding, you can make it simple and just take out a few helpings at a time and freeze it a little at a time rather than worry about trying to accommodate a huge bag.  As long as your not using pine or cedar of course, since it is bad for all small mammals.  I use aspen.    Also many people complain that carefresh seemed to carry mites and lice.  I am starting to believe that too!
