Question
I tried to reply to the recent post but said that there were too many replies so I am sending this as a new question.

When I took Nick to the vet the vet told me it was a necrotic infection and due to the the severity of the infection the tail probably won't be able to heal by itself.  His recommendation was to have the tail removed right above the infection.  He also said that there is a chance that if left allow it might not grow any worse and he might just live with the huge scab for the rest of his life.  At the moment I'm trying to determine if I want to have the tail removed.

Answer
I knew it was infection the second I saw it.  Necrosis is dead tissue. This tissue became infected, but WHY and HOW did this occur. The vet MUST know the underlying cause.  Did he get a cut there?  Does he have diabetes? Before removing this tail, you need to know if he can heal ok, which leads me to the Vet and his ability to do this surgery properly.  Please go private and let me know the name of the vet.  You did not say if any medications were given. If you say no, I think I would seriously find another vet for the job.  He should have been put on aggressive antibiotics to conquer the infection and also something for pain BUT NOT METACAM. A sample of the tissue should have been taken so they can find the source of the infection.
If the tail wont heal on its own, I would for sure expect that antibiotics are being dispensed for him.  Please say YES!
