Question
We have a pair of parakeets they we have had for a couple of years now. A year ago we got a nesting box for them. Since then 3 different times the female has laid eggs. Each time though the eggs have been unfertile. What can we do to help her have fertile eggs.

Answer
Hi, Tonya.  Thanks for posting!

There isn't anything you can do to help your female lay fertile eggs, except trying fertility vitamins and the like, which usually don't work.  Are you sure you have a female and a male?  If so, how are you sure of their sexes?  What has been the process the past 3 times when they have laid eggs, i.e., did you let them abandon these eggs on their own, did they incubate the eggs at all, did you open any of the eggs in the end to see what was going on inside them?  How did you know they were infertile versus dying in the shell?

Female birds can lay infertile eggs without mating with a male.  This is why I've asked you about their sexes.  Not all eggs laid hatch, but it's unusual for not even 1 egg out of 3 clutches to hatch.

Come back with answers to questions above and any other information you can think of and I'll see if I can help more.

Thanks.
