Giving my mouse a bath /applying an ointment

Question
Do you have any suggestions for me,
I need to use a shampoo(mean't for cats/dogs) on my mouse around a small area his neck
and the vet said to be very careful
cause it is toxic and could kill him.
He gave me a syringe to use when rinsing him off.

I then have to apply some ointment to his neck
The mouse is very wiggly so I'm not sure of the best way
to do these things safely??

Thank you for any advice you can give me!

Answer
Dear Francine,

It may take two people to administer to the mouse.  One can hold him by the scruff of the neck (it's the loose skin at the back of his neck, where a mother holds her young) with one hand and support him with the other, while the other person uses a Q-tip to apply the solution.  You'll have to figure the logistics out at the time.  Mice struggle like all get-out when you pick them up by the scruff of the neck, but it doesn't hurt them at all.

Use only a tiny dab of the shampoo, already diluted with water, rub it in a tiny bit and rinse it off thoroughly.  It worries me to apply anything poisonous to the skin because the mouse will lick it off and eat it.  Make sure everything you use is warm and you have a nice fluffy washcloth to dry him off with immediately.

To apply the ointment, which I assume is less dangerous, don't worry about getting it onto other parts of him besides his neck.  Again, it may help to have a second person hold the mouse by the scruff of his neck.  Use a Q-tip or your finger, whichever is easiest.

Good luck to your mouse!
