Question
My mouse, Gus, was attacked by my sisters cat a few weeks ago. his leg was full of blood. so i rinsed it in warm water to see if it was cut but i didn't see any thing. so i put polysporen on it. after a while he stopped eating then drinking. i make him drink with an eyedropper and now his leg is swollen and foot starting to go purple.how do i konw if its broken or infected? i looked all over the internet and it all said i would have to put him down. and so did the vets. is there anyway i can try fix him b4 he has to be put down?

Answer
Dear Kimberly,

I'm afraid the chances aren't very good for your mouse, but the faster you can act, the more chance he'll have.

The best thing would be to have a vet give him a shot of antibiotic.

If that's not going to happen, go to a pet or aquarium store in the FISH section and get TETRACYCLINE.  It'll be in capsule, tablet, or powder form.  The following post explains how to use it:

To be more clear about the water:  Put 1 capsule = 1/4 flat teaspoon of powder of crushed capsule into a 12 oz water bottle.  Change every other day.  Continue for a week.

If the leg is broken it's too late to do anything about it.  It will mend or has mended as it was, and may be crooked, but the mouse won't know he's different than any other mouse.  Just make sure he has easy access to food & water.

I wish him the very best of luck.

squeaks,
