Train travel with mice!? (Urgent!)

Question
Hi,

A week ago my friend gave me 2 male mice - Pick and Mix. I
think they are about 2 months old. They are settling in well
with me and are getting used to eating food from my hand,
etc. I am a student and will be going home on the train for
5 days the day after tomorrow to visit my family. The train
journey is 3 hours and I am wondering whether it would be
better to take the mice with me in a travel cage, meaning
that we will be able to continue our getting to know
eachother time; or to leave them for a flat mate to care for
which would mean less stress for them but they would miss
out on being with me. I want to do what is best for them!
What would you suggest?

Thank you very much for your help,

Anna

Answer
Dear Anna,

They will be fine on the train. If you can give them each a wheel, or a big enough wheel for both, that would be great. They will run in the wheel much of the time as they travel. My mice have survived many long trips on subway, train, bus, etc. Try not to be near loud noises, and (of course) try not to tip or jostle the cage. Use litter from the regular cage.  Take the water bottle out so it doesn't spill, and give them vegetables that contain moisture such as cucumber, carrot, or celery.

Once they arrive, give them time to recuperate before handling them (half a day). If you are going to put them in a bigger cage, put all the litter from the travel cage in it. If the travel cage fits in the other, so much the better. If it is only a few days they can stay in the travel cage.

Have fun with Pick and Mix!
