Great treats for young mice?

Question
I'm a beginner with mice(although I have had a variety of other rodents) and I would like to know what a young (under a year but probably more than a month) mouse may like to eat as treats. Do you have any home-made treats you make for your mice? Any good brand names you could suggest? Anything would help loads! :)

Answer
Dear Oliver,

My first bit of advice is, stay away from things like "yogies" or other treats the pet shops sell for small animals. These things contain sugar, which a mouse shouldn't have. I do sometimes buy the long seed cylinders meant for birds. The ones that look like mouse seed,  not like bird seed. They may have fruit or nuts; I can't remember the flavors. But there is far more in your very cupboard that will make a mouse very happy.

Mice love popcorn (given without butter and salt, they can have as much as they like), Triscuits, pretzels, sunflower seeds, Fritos, soft cheeses, nuts, avocado, soy yogurt, and greens. The fatty foods (nuts, buttered popcorn, seeds, avocado, cheese) should be restricted, especially if the mouse gets at all plump. Basically they like fat and salt, just like we do! Any time you have a non-sugary snack, try it on the mouse. Nothing that you eat will poison them, but definitely keep them away from avocado pits, which are poisonous. They love the flesh.

Have fun with your little mouse!
