Question
My first ferret has me worried.  Bandit is 7+ years old and his eating and pooping are OK.... Not perfect but ok. He had adrenal surgery 4 years ago.  His left adrenal gland was removed as well as most of the right one. Now I am at a loss of what's up.  All his hair except his head and front paws is gone totally.  He seems to have lost weight and every bone is visible.  He doesn't play.  I am pretty sure he is now blind or very close to it. I've felt it was time to help him over to the rainbow bridge. My husband refuses to let that happen and says he is fine.  My heart breaks for Bandit. He walks around bumping into everything and then just curls up and goes to sleep in his hammock. I guess I just want to hear your opinion on when it's time to let go. I don't know what to do... I am asking because I am sure there are others wondering the very same thing. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Claudia:

This is truly the hardest part of owning ferrets.  My heart breaks for you. However, obviously Bandit is no longer enjoying his life.  As his mommy, the one who most loves him, he can only hope and pray you will help him. At his age, his symptoms, he is not a candidate for another adrenal surgery (the reason for his recurrent hair loss), and being blond is certainly complicating his life. I cannot make the decision for you, however it does seem that time is here to show him your love by making the most difficult decision for him. He is not going to get better, only suffer more.

I am so sorry but feel the sooner he is helped the better.

God bless you as you do this difficult task. Know you ARE showing him love and mercy by helping him move on.

Sincerely,
Jacquie Rodgers
