Make my dog sleep in his own bed and not mine!

Question
Hello Anne,

I hope you can help me. My husband and I have a Mini Schnauzer that is 9 months old. We got him when he was 4 months. A little over a month ago we started to allow him to take naps with us on our bed which quickly turned in to letting him sleep in our bed through the night. We are ready to break this habit and have him sleep in his own bed on the floor. We started this process 2 days ago by putting his bed next to my bed side. I try and make him stay in his bed after the lights are turned off and gently pet him. He did okay the first night but jumped in to bed as soon as the sun came up. However last night he slept in his bed for about an hour and a half and then found his way on to our bed and actually barked/whined a little. Please give me some insight. What is the best way to make this transition for him. I would like to get him to sleep in his bed without having to put him in his crate. I am open to using a crate if there are not other options but it would not be my first choice. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance for your help.

Learn to clicker train!  Here's a video of someone teaching her dog to "go to mat" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVGaslyGaGE
The secret of having him stay on his mat, or bed, all night, is to do the training (crate him at night until you get some duration on the mat built up) so that he thinks the bed is the best place on earth to be. All good things happen on the mat;-)
There are some free basic lessons at www.clickerlessons.com so you can get a feel for this kind of training.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how fast you dog learns.
