Cocker spaniel grooming

Question
Our 4 year old female cocker spaniel has decided that she does not want her legs groomed. Everything is alright until the groomer gets to her legs, then she bites at the groomer. What can we do to make grooming a better experience?

Answer
I don't have a clear answer to this.  A vet check never hurts when a behavior problem crops up.

Most groomers are professionals and know their business far better than I do.  Still, I might ask what kind of a brush the groomer is using?  I grit my teeth a little about using a common wire toothed slicker brush on my dogs because it is mildly uncomfortable for them.  However, I feel I have to something when they are shedding.  It would be fairly easy to concentrate too much pressure on the legs, leading to more discomfort.  More gentle application, or another style brush might help.

Dogs need to be taught it is never acceptable to put their teeth on humans.  The place to start is with a good obedience program.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/
