Question
Molly, our cocker is 12 possible 13 ( we received her when she was at least a year) She is now blind from cateracts. She has terrible ear problems. She seems active enough, but she also looks miserable! We dont know really when it is time to let go. She is a outdoor dog because she was not trained before we received her, and couldnt get her to work with us after! I keep her in one area of the yard while I am at work or away so she doesnt hurt herself. I feel this just isnt a good way to live. My question again, When is it alright to let go? Should I wait till she really has a really bad health problem?

Answer
Kristen,
This is such a sensitive topic. I have tears in my eyes as I write this to you because I know you are facing a very big decision.
Although I hope I never am faced with this decision, I know that chances are it will happen someday. I personally feel that there comes a point when you have to put your attachment aside, and think about what is best for your dog, not for your own feelings. Since she is blind and has ear problems, chances are she is limited to what she can do. If she is in pain, then really, she isn't enjoying life anymore. However, if the vet says she isn't suffering, then its your decision to decide how much of a quality life she is leading.
Talk to your vet. I think that's important to get a medical professionals opinion.
In the meantime, give Molly lots of love. She needs that now more than anything.

All the best to you.
Kerri
