Wonderful 1.5 year old cockapoo, BUT

Question
she barks a lot! she is well-trained in every other part. no housebreaking issues since day 1, does all the basic commands, but when she hears something outside or the door open, she barks and I can't get her to stop. I have tried treats, toys, praise, punishment, water sprits, and nothing works. Any help would be so appreciated.

She is 1.5 years old, female, 2nd generation cockapoo. No abuse or anything. She gets a lot of excercise and her diet is good.

Answer
Hi David,
Well, this is a minor problem (which is a welcome relief for me :)

What she's doing is protecting her territory and her pack...which would be you!  I'm gathering that the barking goes on and on?

What I'd try is a citronella bark collar.  When she barks she'll get a snort of citronella.  They REALLY hate this and it usually does the trick especially if you command NO simultaneously.

I have used these and they're so effective that you usually don't need them for very long.  Actually had a remote control one that I used for a possession-aggression problem and I've never seen a dog SO surprised/appalled when I hit the button after he didn't obey "Drop it".

You don't need a remote control one though..and they're very expensive.  Just get the collar that's activated by barking and make sure she "associates" the NO with the result.  I'd bet you'll only need this for a week maximum.

And yes, they're safe.  Use it only as long as it takes.

With the aggressive pup (who was extremely smart) I actually took the collar off within days and when I commanded him to "drop it" all I had to do was pick up the remote and he spit out the object like it was on fire :)

The other thing you can try is getting an empty pop can..fill it with about 15 pennies..tape top shut.  Command NO and then bring it down hard one time to make a thundering noise.  It's like you're throwing a baseball as hard as you can..without letting go of it, of course.
This is cheap - quick - and often works wonders.  If she doesn't stop at once...move towards her and do it again.

With another misbehaving pup this worked amazingly well and within days all I had to do was pick up the can and give it a slight "tinkling" sound and he caved.  A dog's hearing is about 50 times more sensitive than ours so this is like a bolt of thunder from God.

And, by the way, trying "treats-toys-praise" was basically reinforcing the behavior.  The water spritz was a good idea and that works sometimes but some dogs just don't seem to mind it.  By alternating all these approaches she's now just confused.

So try one of these...give it a few days..then proceed to the next suggestion if it doesn't work.
I'd love to hear back.
Best of luck,
Delores
