Question
QUESTION: I have a 7-1/2 month old cockapoo.  Her shoulder is approximately 13" high, yet last night she leaped onto my bed which is 30" off the ground.  I was amazed that she could leap -- without a running start -- more than twice her height.  I think I remember hearing that cocker spaniels are good jumpers.  Is that true?

ANSWER: Most dogs could manage that jump and she's very young and full of energy.

Usually if they can (on hind legs) reach a surface with their paws - they can jump on it easily.

Now just keep her that way with a premium diet and lots of exercise! :)

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your very prompt response.  Just last week, while watching the Animal Channel, they mentioned that a dog less than 12" at the shoulder should only be expected to jump to a height of 2" below the shoulder height while a dog over 12" should be able to jump 2" above their shoulder.  Was that not an accurate statement?

Answer
The key word there is "expected".  Like people, every dog is different and some are just better jumpers.  There is no hard and fast rule, only generalities.

One of my own cockers is a far, far better jumper than the other one.  Same age - same size.
