QuestionOur Australian shepherd is everthing wonderful that owners rave about except in one thing: When she's in the car and figures out she's going to a park or an outing, she won't stop barking. I like to think it's from sheer joy but she's got an ear shattering bark. Any suggestions on how to get her to be more positive and less vocal in her exuberance?
AnswerYou could train her to wear a "calming cap" (www.premierpet.com). You would acclimate her to it the same way as to a Gentle Leader head collar or a muzzle (free guidelines for acclimation at www.morrco.com). Sometimes, Aussies bark because of too much visual stimulation. Or, you could have her ride in a crate with a crate cover and see if that helps. If not, seek out a clicker trainer to help you teach her to bark on cue, and quiet on cue.
