Question
We have 2 shih-tzus, a 2 yr. old male and a 1 yr. old female.  I am looking a getting a big dog to walk with and be a part of the family (we have 3 young girls...obviously I like chaos!).  I'm looking at a standard poodle.  The pups are 5 months old.  Should we get a male or female to fit in?  Thank You!

Answer
Hi Tracey, Are your dog neutered and spayed? If so, you could get either a male or female standard poodle. We have a neutered male std. poodle, a large doberman pinscher stud, and a Toy Fox Terrier breeding female. Everyone gets along, but we are also service dog trainers and our dogs are worked several times every day. A five month old Standard Poodle will have a lot of energy. It is usually better to get a younger one, but if you have decided on a five month old, you should begin your training immediately. Since my family members have been breeding Standard Poodles for a few generations, I personally prefer the females. They have less dominance issues, are easier to train, and do not have a wander need.  They are a very high energy and very smart breed. They require lots of walking and exercise at the heel at least once a day to keep their minds and bodies healthy. They are very agile and are not clumsy, so they will not step all over your little dogs. The only downside is the grooming issue.  But if you don't mind doing the grooming and/or taking them to the groomer frequently, then it will not be a problem.  Be sure to establish yourself as the alpha leader of your pack. Then let your little dogs be beta and the poodle be the sentry. This will eliminate dominance problems. Leave me some feedback and keep me posted on your progress.  Enjoy the new member to your pack, they really are a pleasure. Regards, Susan
